Light Machine Guns are amongst the heaviest weaponry infantry can wield in PlanetSide, boasting unparalleled magazine sizes affording them the highest damage-per-magazine in an infantryman's arsenal, allowing them to truly shine in extended engagements. For this power, they do sacrifice some of the raw damage output of other weapon classes, but a skilled handler can easily push past these minor cons.
Light machine guns, for their suppression power, tend to sacrifice close-quarters potency as compared to other primary weapon classes, though the class does nonetheless offer options that somewhat fight back against this class-wide weakness, which also tend to bring the highest damage output in class, but at expense of a large amount of magazine size. Regardless, all light machine guns can still perform in close-to-mid range engagements, particularly those the user can predict and those that end up extending out to longer duration where the larger magazine sizes can shine.
The light machine gun market tends to offer options that play with the classes' viability in differently paced engagements.
